Had a bad night’s sleep? We’ve all been there. Here are ten ways you can try out to get a blissful night’s sleep.

Get into a good routine

Get into a routine of going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, bearing in mind you need around six to nine hours of sleep every night to get the required Zzz quota!

Be sure to relax

Indulge in a warm bubble bath, read a book or magazine, or listen to some calming music to relax your mind so you’re ready to drift off to sleep.

Watch your diet

Be smart about what you’re eating and drinking during the day. Start by cutting down on all those coffees! Caffeine has been proven to cause sleep problems, even ten to twelve hours after you’ve consumed some. Also, try avoiding big meals at night and instead have your dinner earlier on or enjoy a larger lunch and then a lighter snack in the evening.

Enjoy the great outdoors

Expose yourself to more light. Every opportunity you have to be outside, take it! Even if it's just your work break or to go out for a run or take the dog for a walk.

Embrace natural light

Let as much natural light as possible into your workspace. Turn off all those lights and desk lamps and open up the blinds.

Put your phone away

Avoid bright screens for an hour or two before you fall asleep.

The blue and white light on your phone, laptop, tablet or TV is disruptive and pretty much tells your brain “IT’S NOT TIME TO SLEEP YET!”

Consider your sleep environment

Make sure your bedroom is sleep friendly! Turn off all your gadgets and make sure they’re not plugged in too closely to your bed. You also don’t want it too hot or too cold (18oC – 24oC is just right) and close your curtains or blinds to block out the light.

Be organised

Manage your stress so you can get a relaxing night’s sleep. Make time to get yourself organised and plan your next day; you can then enjoy relaxing before you go to bed. It’s not always that easy but those extra few minutes planning during the day today mean a more restful sleep and better tomorrow.

Get active

Include physical activities in your daily routine where you can. This will help you fall asleep faster and help you enjoy a deeper sleep.

Choose a mattress with dreamlike quality

Lastly and most importantly, make sure your mattress and bed is perfect! Sleep is so important – with us spending a third of lives in bed – and all that tossing and turning in the night may be a sign that you need a new mattress.
